Was intent to kill Abrar or just beat him: police inquiring

Dhaka, Oct 14 – Police yesterday said that Abrar Fahad, who was a student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), was beaten to death on suspicions of being a Chhatra Shibir member. Monirul Islam, Chief of Counterterrorism and transnational unit (CTTC) made the remarks while talking to the journalist at Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) media centre.
“Based on the confessional statements of the accused, we understand that Abrar was beaten to death on suspicions of being a Chhatra Shibir member,” he said.
However, after the full investigation, we will be able to confirm whether he was beaten with the intention of murder or they just beat him, he added.
In the Meantime, Mujahidur Rahman Mujahid, a third-year student of electrical and electronic engineering (EEE) department of Buet; Meftahul Islam Zion, ex-sports secretary; Ifti Mosharraf Sakal, ex-deputy social service secretary, and Anik Sarker, ex-information and research affairs secretary of Buet Chhatra League unit, have given their confessional statements before the a lower court.
Abrar, a second-year student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department of the university, was beaten to death allegedly by some leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League’s (BCL) Buet unit inside the university’s Sher-e-Bangla Hall in the early hours of Monday.
“We will complete our investigation before the deadline fixed for us by the lower court and then, the whole truth will be unveiled,” said Monirul.
Monirul Islam also mentioned that the investigation will complete by early November. Detective Branch (DB) of DMP will submit a charge sheet of the case in November.
Responding to a question, whether there was a police patrol team in BUET on that night of the incident, Monirul Islam said, “A police team patrolled in the BUET area till 3 am on that day of the incident. But they didn’t get any news of such thing at that time.
As of Monday, 19 people have been detained in connection with Abrar’s murder. Among them, 15 were accused in the case filed over his murder; the rest of them were detained because of their alleged involvement.
The BCL yesterday expelled its BUET unit leader Amit Saha, who has been arrested over the killing of Abrar Fahad. Amit was the deputy law affairs secretary of BUET Chhatra League unit.
Chhatra League’s central executive body announced the expulsion in a media release yesterday.
October 10, the Detective Branch (DB) of police detained Amit from a house at the capital’s Sabujbagh area. – Staff Reporter
