Wash your pillow covers now

If you wash your pillow covers once a week then you are not doing it enough, a leading hygiene expert has warned.

In the UK recent research found that a mere 35 percent of adults changed their bed linen once a fortnight. But 10 percent admitted they slept in the same bedding for up to a month.

Australian cleaning expert Shannon Lush told news.com.au: “If you’re showering once a day, you can wash your sheets weekly… However, pillowcases should be changed every second day without fail. It’s against your face, and your hair holds more dirt than anywhere else on the body. It’s like a mop.”

Expressing surprise that people do not wash their pillow covers enough, she added: “It collects old skin cells, which we shed especially when we are asleep. The pillow is a major cause of blackheads.’

But she said duvets could be washed less often – maybe as little as two times a year.

But when it comes to pillows, these remain her bugbear; she said they needed to be replaced regularly: “If you hold your arm out and drop your pillow over your forearm width-ways and it sags, then it’s time to buy a new pillow,” she said.

“Ideally, pillows should be replaced when they’re lumpy, saggy, smelly or discolored – the time between buys depends on level of usage, how much you sweat, how often it gets washed and so on — best to stick to the above visual and nasal clues.”
