What steps taken to ensure security of judges: HC asks govt

Dhaka, July 17 – The High Court on Wednesday wanted to know from the government on what steps it has taken to ensure the security of the judges, lawyers and officials in the courts across the country.
It also wanted to know about steps taken against those police officials who were in charge of the security at the Cumilla Additional District and Sessions Judge’s court where the killing incident took place.On July 15, during the court proceeding, a murder accused was stabbed to death by another in front of a judge and police members inside a packed courtroom in Cumilla, raising serious questions about the security in courtrooms.
The HC bench also said that how a person could enter into the courtroom with a knife. What is the work of police and definitely it is police’s negligence, the HC bench said.
The HC bench comprising Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader came up with the order during hearing on a writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Ishrat Hasan.
The HC bench adjourned hearing of the petition for two weeks and asked the authorities concerned of the government to inform it on what steps it has been taken to ensure proper security for the courts across the country within July 30.
Deputy Attorney General Abdullah-Al-Mahmud Bashar represented the government during the day’s hearing.
Ishrat Hasan filed the writ petition on July 16 seeking HC directives on the authorities concerned of the government to take proper security measures for the judges and the courts.
After filing the petition Advocate Ishrat Hasan told reporters, “As the wife of a judge, I am worried because of the grisly murder inside the courtroom, and that is why I have filed a petition seeking directives to provide security to all the judges and courtrooms across the country.”
In the petition, Ishrat Hasan mentioned that her husband is a judge and she is concerned with her husband’s security following the killing incident in Cumilla on Monday. The petitioner prayed to the HC to pass necessary order in this regard. – Staff Reporter
