Dhaka – The last time the West Indies won a one-day International series was in August 2014. Since then they lost all 16 one-day series they played around the globe. The stand-in captain Rovman Powell is keen to change that course in the series against Bangladesh which begins Sunday at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium with a day-night encounter.
“We’ve not won a one-day series in a long time. The guys’re upbeat and raring to go. No better opportunity to change it in Bangladesh. We have played some lovely cricket in India, but we didn’t get the results that we wanted,” Rovman said on Saturday in the pre-match press conference in Mirpur.
“We have a few series before the World Cup. It will be good to get the series win under our belt, and it will give us the must needed confidence before heading into the World Cup also,” added the dashing batsman.
In the last one-day International series against the Tigers, the Windies were outshot by a 2-1 margin. Tamim Iqbal, the left-handed opener of Bangladesh, played a pivotal role with two century in three matches. He has made a comeback after recovering a broken wrist and he will be playing the series.
Shakib Al Hasan also returned to the Bangladesh side after suffering from a nasty finger injury.
The returning of these two key players could make the visitors’ job difficult. Their captain sounded however upbeat.
“I think we have a good enough team to beat them in Bangladesh. They are in full strength but we are also close to full strength. It will be an exciting series,” Rovman said.
The second International of the series will also take place in Dhaka on December 11. The other one-day will be held in Sylhet International Stadium on December 14, a first of its kind in the venue.UNB
