World’s largest offshore wind farm gets go ahead

British Energy Secretary Ed Davey has given the go-ahead for the world’s largest offshore wind farm after granting planning consent for the
Triton Knoll project.Situated 20 miles off the Lincolnshire and Norfolk coasts, and with almost 300 wind turbines planned, Triton Knoll will surpass London
Array as the world’s current largest offshore wind farm.
Once operational, Triton Knoll will be capable of generating 1,200 MW of energy and powering up to 850,000 homes.
Design, environment and energy consultancy, LDA Design, undertook the Seascape, Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment (SLVIA) for the
offshore wind farm on behalf of developer RWE npower renewables.
In gaining consent for the Triton Knoll development, LDA Design’s total of consented offshore wind farms reaches twelve, five of which are already operational. Collectively the twelve developments could have the capacity to generate just under 3,500 MW of renewable energy, enough to power nearly 2 million homes and achieve a 3.5 million tonnes reduction in CO2 emissions per annum.
William Wheeler, Head of Offshore Wind Energy at LDA Design, said: “Triton Knoll is a major milestone for the UK offshore wind industry
and a project of this scale will undoubtedly make a massive contribution to helping the UK meet its renewable energy target. We are delighted to have assisted RWE npower renewables in securing its consent”
Jacob Hain, Triton Knoll Project Manager, said: “We believed that Triton Knoll was a very well sited project. The decision by the Secretary of State endorses this. It sends another positive message to the industry about the growth and potential of renewables in the UK.” – nextgen
