DHAKA —The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has decided to name the Youth Cricket League (YCL) as ‘Shaheed Sheikh Kamal Youth Cricket League’ from the next edition of the event.
The board has taken the decision to recognize the contribution of Shaheed Sheikh Kamal to sports and cricket in Bangladesh.
Kamal, the eldest son of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is widely considered as the architect of the modern sports of the country.
He introduced modern technology and equipment in the country’s sports arena and in doing so, helped the country to create its own identity in the World Sports arena.
“He is the architect of modern sports in this country and has made an immense contribution for the betterment of all kinds of sports in this country. Therefore we decided to name the Youth Cricket League after his name,” BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon said here today.
The YCL is an annual four-team Under-19 competition organised by Game Development BCB consisting of a 4-day and a one-day match in each round. The tournament is organized every year to bolster the pipeline of the young cricketers.
“You know we have more emphasized on youth cricketers. The tournament is organised to pick up the best youth players who would vie for the spot in the Under-19 team,” he said.
“As we concentrated more on youth cricket, it gave us the rewards and our Under-19 players became world champions. If Kamal bhai is alive, he would have been too happy for this achievement. Kamal bhai also emphasised on the development from the grassroots level.”BSS
