Young cricketers urged to prove their credential

DHAKA—The Bangladesh national selectors have called up a good number of young cricketers for the upcoming home series against West Indies, keeping faith in their ability.

As many as four players—fast bowlers Shoriful Islam, Hasan Mahmud, left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed and batsman Parvez Hossain Emon made their way into the preliminary squad.

The selectors said their immense ability inspired them to give a chance and adjust with the national team’s culture so that they can prepare them for the bigger stage.

Those four players put up an impressive performance in both the tournaments (President’s Cup and Bangabandhu T20 Cup) organized by Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

The case of Shariful Islam is a bit different. Even before these two tournaments, the young pacer has played for Bangladesh ‘A’ team and has been able to meet the expectations of the team management. Moreover, he has been in the BCB pipeline for a long time. The selectors said now it’s the high time for him to take him in the next step

Parvez Hossain Emon has been called up due to his immense talent. In the recently concluded Bangabandhu T20 Cup, the left-hander blasted a century off just 42 balls, shattering all the old records of the country’s fastest century in the recognized T20.

The selectors believe with a little care, he might establish him as one of the best batsmen in the country and therefore he is in the preliminary squad for the home series against West Indies.

“This is our preliminary squad. Those who are new here have done well in this recent tournament and in the previous ones,” said selector Habibul Bashar Sumon.

“But Shariful has been playing well for many years. Shariful has even played in our ‘A’ team. He has been in our pipeline for a long time. Emon is the most exciting talent I’ve ever seen. We are giving him a chance to get ready faster.”

The players of the preliminary squad will play two practice matches among them, split into two teams. By seeing their performance in those matches, the final team for the series will be given, said Bashar, also the former skipper of the national team.

“We can use those players in the future. We have to form a team in the two practice matches we will play on January 14 and 16. We are giving these boys a chance so that they can prepare themselves by playing with the current national players,” he added.BSS
