Bangladesh wins second test, levels series

Visitors Bangladesh won the second test by 143 runs making the hosts Zimbabew pack up for 257 runs on the fifth day today. Bangladesh were 391 in the first innings and 291-9 declared in the second. In reply Zimbabwe scored 282 in the first innings and were all out for 257 in the second, according to messages received in Dhaka late in the afternoon.

By virtue of this win the visitors levelled the two-match test series and recovered from the frustrating defeat at the hiands of the hosts in the first test.

Earlier, Bangladesh were set for a final-day victory in the second Test after setting Zimbabwe 401 to win and reducing the host to 138-4 by stumps on the fourth day on Sunday. Although the Zimbabwe batsmen were given slight relief when umpires took the players off early for bad light at Harare Sports Club, Bangladesh were still well-placed to level the two-Test series involving cricket’s lowest-ranked teams.
Captain Mushfiqur Rahim’s 93 and half-centuries by Shakib Al Hasan and Nasir Hossain led Bangladesh to 291-9 declared in their second innings earlier in the day, a lead of exactly 400.
Hamilton Masakadza was 46 not out at the early close, but Zimbabwe had sent in nightwatchman Shingirai Masakadza and needs to bat all of Monday to win the series.
Bangladesh scored 236 runs losing seven batsmen in their second innings against Zimbabwe at Harare Sunday.Nasir and Sohag Gazi were on the crease with 31 and 5 runs respectively.
H Masakadza bagged two wickets and S Masakadza took three of Bangladesh wickets for Zimbabwe.
Captain Mushfiqur, Shakib and Mominul scored 93, 59 and 29 runs respectively.
Bangladesh scored 163 runs for five at the stump on third day.

Bangladesh bowled Zimbabwe out for 282 and built a 272-run lead by stumps on the third day of the second Test on Saturday, pushing for the win that would level the series between cricket’s lowest-ranked teams.Seamer Robiul Islam took 5-85 and spinner Sohag Gazi had 4-59 to do the damage for the Bangladeshis at Harare Sports Club as Zimbabwe fell well short of Bangladesh’s first-innings 391.
The Bangladesh batsmen then pressed home their advantage in the final test, with Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim both making half-centuries in the 163-5.
Shakib was out late in the day for 59, but his partnership of 84 with skipper Rahim, who was 50 not out at the close, took Bangladesh away from danger at 18-3 and 65-4 and into a match-winning position with two days to go.
Continuing on 158-4, Zimbabwe lost Malcolm Waller early and relied on 86 by allrounder Elton Chigumbura to get it close to 300. Wicketkeeper Richmond Mutumbami also chipped in with 42 in just his second test but after Chigumbura became one of Islam’s five wickets, the Zimbabweans bell away to concede a 109-run, first-innings deficit.
Zimbabwe had a glimpse of a turnaround when it removed Tamim Iqbal, Jahurul Islam and Mohammad Ashraful cheaply, partly thanks to paceman Shingirai Masakadza’s opening burst that eventually helped him to 3-33.
But Shakib and Rahim, as they did in the first innings, settled Bangladesh and forged toward a 300-run lead before Shakib fell to Chigumbura four overs from stumps.
Zimbabwe won the first of the two Tests in Harare by 335 runs.

Earlier, Zimbabwe were 158-4 and 233 runs behind Bangladesh’s first-innings score of 391 at stumps on day two of the second Test at Harare Sports Club on Friday.Bangladesh dismissed Brendan Taylor for 36 late in the final session for an important breakthrough after the Zimbabwe skipper made two centuries in his team’s strong win in the first Test.
Zimbabwe were 34 short of the follow-on by the end of play, with Malcolm Waller 30 not out and Elton Chigumbura unbeaten after a rapid 45 off 49 balls with five fours.
The tourists have still fought back strongly over the first two days of the final Test after a heavy 335-run defeat last weekend.
After posting a good total, Bangladesh removed Zimbabwe openers Regis Chakabva and Vusi Sibanda inside 13 overs and Taylor holed out to midwicket off Sohag Gazi after a typically watchful 104-ball innings.
Bangladesh earlier added 91 to their overnight score, with Nasir Hossain eventually out for 77. He was helped by lower-order contributions from Sohag Gazi, who made 21, and No. 11 Robiul Islam, who was 24 not out.
Hossain and Gazi put on 51 for the eighth wicket to push Bangladesh close to 400 after earlier half-centuries by Shakib Al Hasan and captain Mushfiqur Rahim on Thursday. Hossain clattered 11 boundaries in a belligerent 77 from 103 balls before legspinner Graeme Cremer bowled him round his legs.
Cremer (2-109) and Keegan Meth, with 2-41, backed up seamer Chigumbura’s 3-75 but Bangladesh put itself in position to level the short series between the two lowest-ranked teams in Test cricket after the Zimbabweans put the visitors in to bat.
Zimbabwe’s reply was shaky as Chakabva and Sibanda edged behind to wicketkeeper Rahim off Robiul Islam to depart within three runs of each other. Hamilton Masakadza was bowled by spinner Shakib for 14 and Zimbabwe was 45-3.
Taylor temporarily steadied Zimbabwe, but he suddenly hit out at Gazi and was caught by Shakib in the deep.
Chigumbura responded by racing to 45 and Waller dug in alongside him to take the home team to stumps

End of over No. 67, Bangladesh 221 for 4: Shakib Al Hasan is not out on 61 at the moment with Mushfiqur Rahim, who is on 47. The duo have added 96 runs between them and have put Bangladesh innings back on track. Godd start to third session for visitors.
End of over No. 53, Bangladesh 171 for 4: Shakib Al Hasan (38*) and Mushfiqur Rahim (21*) have somewhat re-built the innings at the stroke of tea with an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 46 runs after Bangladesh lost two more wickets in the post-lunch session.
End of over No. 44, Bangladesh 151 for 4 in 45 overs: The experienced Shakib Al Hasan (30*) and Mushfiqur Rehman (13*) have steadied the ship a little in the last 11 overs by not allowing Zimbabwe to hurt them any further. But they need to bat on for most of the remaining time on day one for Bangladesh to have any realistic hopes of posting a total in excess of 300.
End of over No. 34, Bangladesh 125 for 4: Zimbabwe continue to make further inroads post lunch. Chigumbura strikes to remove Mominum Haque for 23, who scoops a good length ball to extra cover. Poor shot selection.

End of over No. 29, Bangladesh 102 for 3: Tamim Iqbal has gifted his wicket away at 49. He gets run out trying to steal a single. Just when it looked he could anchor the innings after the two early wickets, Zimbabwe have struck through a direct hit by Shingi Masakadza.
Tamim Iqbal run out 49 (79)
End of over No. 20, Bangladesh 64 for 2: Keegan Meth got the wicket of Jahurul Islam for 24 who went for a wild stroke after patiently building his innings in the first over. Islam went for a drive off a swinging away full length delivery ending up ballooning it in the air. Five overs later, Shingi Maskadza removed Mohd Ashraful for just four runs. Ashraful too was guilty of throwing his wicket away trying to pull a bouncer outside off. Tamim Iqbal, who looked solid in the middle scoring 30 was joined by Mominul Haque.
End of over No. 10, Bangladesh 35 for 0: Jahurul Islam and Tamim Iqbal scored 35 runs in the first 10 overs after Zimbabwe had put the visitors’ to bat on a green top. Islam was the aggressor of the two cracking two boundaries through the offside region.
