Disappointed at the current political instability, top business leaders on Wednesday sought necessary security measures on Dhaka-Chittagong highway to ensure smooth transportation of goods, especially export-oriented goods.
The business leaders said they have not been able to transport their goods through the Dhaka-Chittagong highway safely in recent days due to frequent countrywide shutdowns.
The top business leaders expressed their concern during a meeting with Inspector General of Police (IGP) Hasan Mahmud Khondkar at his office.
President of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed, President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) M Atiqul Islam, Bangladesh Textiles Mills Association (BTMA) President Jahangir Alamin, FBCCI first vice president Monowara Hakim Ali, former FBCCI President AK Azad, former adviser to the caretaker government Tapan Chowdhury, and other trade body leaders, were present.
During the meeting, the business leaders mentioned that there were incidents of attacks on covered vans laden with garment goods in Chauddogram and Sitakund areas on Dhaka-Chittagong highway during recent hartals.
They said such incidents created panic in the readymade garment sector and the exporters cannot bring goods toDhakaduring hartals causing frequent shipment failures.
They sought immediate steps so that the entrepreneurs can send their goods to their destinations safely.
The IGP listened to their concerns and assured them of keeping export business unhurt at any cost.
