Dhaka – An auto-rickshaw driver was killed and 10 persons including two cops were injured in sporadic violence throughout the country on Wednesday, the first day of 48-hour Jamaat-e-Islami sponsored hartal.
Law enforcing agencies nabbed 43 Jamaat-Shibir activists from different districts including capital in connection with hartal violence.
Law enforcers took position in different points of the capital and other parts in the country.
In Feni, a driver of CNG-run auto-rickshaw died after sustaining head injuries in an attack by hartal supporters at around 2:00am.
One Abu Naser (45) was badly injured by bricks thrown at an auto-rickshaw he was travelling in at the Dagonbhuiyan-Basurhat road, said Sajid , OC of Companiganj police station.
“The doctors at the Comapniganj Upazila health complex declared him dead when he was brought in,” Sajid said.
Naser was learning how to drive auto-rickshaw with the driver beside him when the bricks hit him. The police said that they were informed by a relative of the dead.
In Satkhira, 12 Jamaat-Shibir men nabbed by police and one got bullet injuries as they hurled several cocktails at police near Kadamtola area in the district.
In Comilla, seven Jamaat activists and two policemen were injured after a clash between picketers and police at Laksham upazila.
In the capital, police arrested three Jamaat-Shibir men for hurling crude bombs near Kalshi area at Mirpur in wee hours of the day.
In Sylhet, metropolitan police arrested 20 Jamaat-shibir men from different parts of the city for planning to conduct subversive act.
In Khulna, three picketers detained by police for hurling cocktails and setting fire on tyres and barricaded road.
In Brahmanbaria, police detained six picketers from different areas of the district during hartal hours.
On Tuesday, Jamaat-e-Islami called a 48-hour hartal from Wednesday morning protesting the Supreme Court verdict that enhanced Qauder Mollah’s verdict to death.
The Appellate division sentenced Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Mollah to death for his involvement in crimes against humanity during liberation war in 1971.
In Chittagong law enforcers held 22 activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatra Shibir from port city’s Kotwali and Panchlaish areas for their alleged involvement in Tuesday’s violence protesting the Supreme Court verdict against Quader Mollah.
Police sources said several team of police, in separate drives on Tuesday midnight to early Wednesday, arrested them for attacking police and setting fire on a police vehicle. Legal steps will be taken soon against them after securitization.
