10 hurt in Shibir-police clash in Narayanganj

Police in Narayanganj fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse activists of the Islami Chhatra Shibir who allegedly swooped on the security officials on Saturday.

At least 10 people, including four police officials, were injured during the melee in the district’s Chasharha area.

An injured police official was sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital with critical injuries.

The chaos broke out after police asked the activists tied to the Jamaat-e-Islami to refrain from bringing out a procession in the area, said Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station Officer In-charge SM Manjur Kader.

The Shibir activists campaigning, often violently, for a halt to the war crimes trial started gathering on the Shaheed Minar premises for the procession. But police refused to allow them to go ahead.

The police action came after the activists started beating Assistant Sub-inspector ‘Jafar’.

The situation deteriorated after extra police were called in, while stone-throwing Shibir activists continued attacking the security officials. The activists also beat Police Constables ‘Aminul’, Abdul Ali, and ‘Mamun’.

The injured policemen were sent to Khanpur Hospital. One of them was later transferred to the DMCH.

At least five Shibir men were also among the injured. Their identities could not be determined immediately.bdnews24.com
