1,000 more distressed people in Char Alatali and Char Narayanpur Union Parishads under Sadar Upazila of Chapainawabgonj district received blankets Monday.
Agriculture Sustainable and Socio Economic Development (ASSEDO) under its ‘Nodi O Jiban Projet-2’ sponsored the warm clothes for the distressed and marginalised community.Under the corporate social responsibility programme of Bangladesh Bank, Unnoyan Somonnoy and Concern Worldwide supported the endeavor.Earlier in January last, the development organization distributed 1,500 blankets among the cold-stricken people of the hard-to-reach char area.Main thrust of the five-year Nodi O Jiban programme is to ensure food security of the extreme poor community through involving them in diversified productive and income generating activities.Under the scheme, the 3144-targeted families were also given seeds of different crops including wheat, black grams, maize, groundnut and potato, 145 goats and 12 sewing machines to recoup their losses caused by the devastated floods in last monsoon.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Dr Azizur Rahman, Narayanpur UP Chairman Alamgir Kabir, President of Local Alliance Shahajahan Ali, ASSEDO Executive Director Agriculturist Rabiul Alam and other officials concerned were present at the distribution ceremony. Speaking on the occasion, they called for uplifting livelihood condition of the vulnerable char people in Rajshahi and Chapainawabgonj districts.They said around 30,000 families live in the riverbeds of Padma under the two districts and they are deprived of most of the fundamental rights including education, health and sanitation.They mentioned that the cold weather made their overall livelihood condition marooned as they are facing more cold bite than that of the mainland.
