Bumper wheat production likely in Panchagarh

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) is expecting bumper production of wheat during the current season in the district.
A total of 15,000 hectares of land have been brought under wheat cultivation in the district with the production target of 45,000 tonnes, DAE office sources said.The DAE sources said of the total cultivation, 7,000 hectares of land have been brought under Prodip variety, 4,000 hectares under Bijoy, 2,500 hectares under Sotapdi and 1,500 hectares under Bari-25 variety.Md Nazrul Islam, Deputy Director of DAE, said farmers of the district were found more confidants in wheat farming on more new land due to less expensive of the cultivation and the water-stress condition as wheat is a less-water consuming plant.The farmers of the areas expressed their satisfaction over the wheat production and price this year. They got 10 maunds of wheat each bigha and sold Tk 800 per maunds.The DAE has supplied all necessary seeds, fertilisers, pesticides, and other agriculture inputs free of cost among the farmers to achieve the production target.Besides, the department has also imparted training to the farmers to make them acquainted with the modern methods of wheat cultivation. -BSS, Panchagarh
