12 get life imprisonment in Chandu murder case in Rajshahi

A trial court here on Monday sentenced 12 persons to life imprisonment in city’s Chandu murder case around 20 years back.
Additional Metropolitan Session Judge Shahidul Islam found them guilty of the murder charge beyond doubt and pronounced the verdict in presence of 11 of them.The convicts were identified as Mukter, Sohrab, Rubel, Sohel, Selim, Anwar, Kalu, Tansen, Mainul, Delu, Azmat and Anwar.The court also fined them Taka 20,000 each in default to suffer one year more behind the bar. Seven other accused of the case— Sayeed, Suman, Pintu, Momin, Azizul, Dipu and Farid— were acquitted as the charge brought against them could not be proved beyond doubt.According to the prosecution story, in brief, is that the accused equipped with firearms, explosives and lethal weapons swooped on Chandu, 24, and injured him seriously at Darikharbona area under
Boalia Police Station in the city on August 31, 1994.  Chandu succumbed to his injuries on the way to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.Elder brother of the victim Abul Kalam Azad lodged a case with Boalia Police Station on the following morning. On completion of investigation, police pressed charges accusing 19 persons.After examining the recorded deposition of the prosecution witnesses and other relevant evidences the session court handed down the aforesaid verdict.Public Prosecutor Ibrahim Hossain and Additional Public Prosecutor Nasrin Akhter Mita appeared in the case on behalf of the state while Advocate Ekramul Haque defended the accused.BSS, Rajshahi
