1299 new dengue patients admitted, four died on Tuesday

Dhaka, Aug 27 – Four more patients died of dengue mosquito-borne disease in Dhaka, Rangpur and Jhenaidah on Tuesday.
Hospitals across the country admitted a large number of dengue patients on the day. A total of 1,299 dengue patients were admitted to different hospitals in the last 24 hours across the country.Of the new cases in the past 24 hours, a total of 608 patients had been hospitalised in Dhaka, whereas 691 patients had been admitted outside Dhaka.
According to the Directorate-General of Health Services (DGHS), the number of recorded cases in the first eight months of this year has hit 66,064.
The dengue-victims were identified as Jishan, 15, a ninth grade student, hailing from Gazipur Sadar Upazila, died of dengue at Dhaka Medical College Hospital yesterday morning.
He was admitted to a Gazipur hospital after contracting four to five days back. As his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to the DMCH last night where he breathed his last.
The second deceased was Mahtab Uddin, 24, of Biral Upazila in Dinajpur, died of dengue at Rangpur Medical College Hospital. He was admitted to the hospital on August 18 and had been kept at the intensive care unit for several days. Later he was shifted to the general ward recently following improvement of his condition. He died there yesterday.
The third victim was Sufia Begum, 55, wife of Abdur Rahim, from Kaliganj Upazila in Jhenaidah district, died of dengue at Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex yesterday. She was admitted to the hospital last Sunday, where she died.
The fourth dengue victim was Hena Begum, 45, wife of Firoz Ahmed from Shyampur police station are in the capital, died of dengue at the DMCH on Monday evening.
She was suffering from high fever in last several days. When her condition deteriorated, she was admitted at Mugda Medical College and Hospital. Later she was referred to the DMCH, where she breathed her last.
A total of 60,569 patients have already been released from hospitals. This means, 90 per cent of the hospitalised dengue patients have gone home after treatment.
The number of admitted patients currently undergoing treatment in government and private hospitals combined is 5,322, according to the DGHS data.
As many as 2,999 patients are currently receiving treatment in 41 government and private hospitals in the capital, whereas a total of 2,323 patients are undergoing treatment outside the capital, the data added.
Meanwhile, DGHS analysed 88 out of 173 cases of death and confirmed 52 deaths which were caused by the mosquito-borne disease.
“We have scrutinised 88 dengue death cases and confirmed 52 dengue deaths so far. We have so far received information about the deaths of 173 people in the dengue outbreak. We are scrutinising the information to confirm whether the deaths had indeed been caused by dengue,” said Dr Meerjady Sabrina Flora, director of the Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research (IEDCR).
Dr Ayesha Akhter, in charge of the disease control room at the Directorate of Health, said: “We’ve received a record number of dengue patients from across the country so far. This month, the number of dengue cases is much higher than that of last month. The number of dengue patients admitted to hospitals across the country is decreasing gradually.”
She also said the health department had taken several initiatives to control the situation. “If the initiatives taken by the DGHS work properly, the number of dengue patients will hopefully decrease further,” she added. – Staff Reporter
