15 BNP men hurt by AL activists in Shariatpur

At least 15 BNP men were injured in an attack allegedly by Awami League activists in Gosairhat upazila on Monday.
Locals said a group of people, numbering 50-60, including supporters of the ruling Awami League-backed upazila chairman candidate Syed Nasir Uddin, launched an attack on the supporters of BNP-backed chairman candidate Sahed Parvez Abbas Mollah with home-made arms, leaving 15 people injured.The BNP men came under the attack while conducting campaign in support of Sahed Parvez Abbas in Jalalpur Modhyerchar and Kodalpur Puritan Launch Ghat areas around 11:00am.The attackers also snatched away some mobile phones and cash from the victims, witnesses said.The injured were admitted to the upazila health complex.Sahed Parvez alleged, “Supporters of Awami League-backed candidate Syed Nasir Uddin attacked my men while they were running mass contact, leaving 15-20 of them injured.”On the other hand, Syed Nasir did not receive call on the mobile phone.
Officer-in-charge of Gosairhat Police Station Rezaul Karim said no clash took place between the two groups at that time; that was just an altercation.
2 BNP men jailed for distributing leaflets in Khagrachhari Khagrachhari, Feb 18 (UNB)- A mobile court here on Monday sentenced two BNP men to 17 days’ imprisonment each for distributing some leaflets with offensive remarks against a vice- chairman candidate in Manikchhari upazila election.The convicts were identified as Shahidul Islam of Hatimura and Abul Kashem of Boraitali.Officer-in-charge of Manikchhari Police Station Keshob Chakrabarti
said a patrol team of police arrested Shahidul Islam from Hatimura and Abul Kashem from Boraitali of the upazila in the afternoon while they were distributing leaflets with disparaging remarks against BNP supported vice-chairman candidate M Enamul Haque in the election.The duo, supporters of BNP rebel candidate SM Robiul Faruqe, was produced before a mobile court led executive magistrate Shanjida Sharmin who handed down the verdict. -UNB, Shariatpur
