17 killed in separate road crashes in 7 districts

At least 17 people were killed and 27 others injured in separate road accidents at different parts of the country on Saturday. According to reports reaching the UNB news desk, the accidents were reported from Bagerhat, Comilla, Savar of Dhaka, Chittagong, Laxmipur, Jhenidah, Thakurgaon districts. In Bagerhat, eight people, including two children, were killed and three others injured when a Khulna-bound microbus from Mawa collided with a Madaripur-bound bus from Khulna on Khulna-Mawa Highway in Taiyab’s Battala area of Fakirhat upazila around 6:15pm. The deceased were identified as Moin, 35, his wife Munni, 25, their two-year old son Mahin, Sagor, a constable of Khulna Metropolitan Police, Dola, Mim and Monir. In Comilla, three people were killed and 15 others injured in a triangular collision involving two buses and a truck on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway at Baropara in Daudkandi upazila in the morning. Two of the deceased were identified as Swapan and Ekramul. Raisuddin, sub-inspector of Daudkandi highway police camp, said the collision took place among the Chittagong-bound ‘Romar Paribahan’ bus from Dhaka, Dhaka-bound ‘Trisha Paribahan’ bus from Comilla and a truck on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway around 10:00am, leaving Swapan and Ekramul dead on the spot and 16 others injured. In Dhaka, two microbus passengers were killed and eight others injured as a truck collided with a microbus on Dhaka-Aricha Highway at Baliarpur in Savar upazila early in the morning. The microbus passengers were returning to Sirajganj from Sylhet. The deceased were identified as Golam Mortuza, 55, of Ramgarh village and Ataur Rahman, 54, of Mirpur village in sadar upazila of the district. Five of the injured were admitted to Enam Medical College Hospital, Savar. In Chittagong, former principal of Hathazri Degree A M Obaidullah, 75, College suffered injuries as a CNG-run auto-rickshaw hit him at Medical Gate area in Hathazari upazila at noon. Obaidullah was first admitted to the upazila health complex and later shifted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) as his condition deteriorated. Obaidullah died at the CMCH around 1:30pm. In Laxmipur, a minor boy, Ripon Hossain, son of Ali Hossain of Nuripara village in Kamalnagar upazila of the district, was injured as a soil-laden truck hit him while crossing a road in Charfalkan area of the upazila in the afternoon. Ripon was taken to the upazila health complex where doctors declared him dead. In Thakurgaon, a BTRC bus smashed a motorcycle on Thakurgaon-Panchagarh Highway in Salanda Bazar of Sadar upazila at noon, leaving biker Babul Hossain and his co-rider critically injured. Babul died on the way to the sadar hospital, said Mehedi Hasan, officer-in-charge of the sadar police station. In Jhenidah, A mosque Imam, Joynal Abedin, 65, son of Israil of Kakiladari village, died on the spot when a moving bus dashed his bicycle at Katakhali in Moheshpur upazila around 9am. – UNB
