Two BNP men were killed in a gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at Ratonerkhil
village in Sadar upazila of the district early Monday.
The deceased were identified as Asaduzzaman Babul, joint general secretary of Dighali union unit of
BNP and son of late Amin Ullah of the village, and party functionary Khorshed Alam Sumon.
Police and locals said a Rab team conducted a drive in the area around 12:30am to arrest Babul.
Sensing the presence of the elite force, Babul and his cohorts opened fire on the crime busters,
forcing them to retaliate that triggered a gun battle, said police.
Babul and Sumon were caught in the line of fire and died on the spot, said a spot account of the
nighttime incident.
After the gunfight that continued for one hour, other terrorists fled the scene, police claimed. They
also took away the body of Sumon.
Officer-in-charge of Laxmipur Sadar Police Station Iqbal Mahmud confirmed the incident and said
they recovered the body of Babul, who was a listed terrorist, and sent it to sadar hospital morgue
for autopsy.
The OC also said he heard that Sumon was also killed in the gunfight. But he could not confirm the
whereabouts of the body. –UNB, Laxmipur
