Two local leaders of Jamaat’s student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir sustained bullet injuries in a clash with police at Shikri village here early Tuesday.
The victims were identified as Ruhul Amin, general secretary of Jessore western region
unit Shibir, and Abul Kashem, president of Benapole municipality unit
Shibir.
Apurba Hasan, officer-in-charge of Benapole Port Police Station, said a team of police conducted a drive in Mahishdanga of the port area and arrested Ruhul Amin and Kashem in the dead of night.
When a police van, carrying them, reached Shikri village, a group of Shibir activists attacked and opened fire on the van, forcing the law enforcers to fire back that triggered a gunfight.
Ruhul Amin and Kashem were injured in the gunfight.Shafiqul Islam and Humayun Kabir, sub-inspectors of the port police station, were also injured.
They were admitted to Jessore Medical College Hospital.
One pistol and two rounds of bullet were recovered from the scene.
