20 hurt in police firing on Sylhet Shibir’s procession

At least 20 Shibir activists, including two with bullet, were injured in police firing on their Independence Day procession at Lamabazar in the city on Wednesday morning. Witnesses said when over 200 activists of Jamaat’s student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir brought out a procession marking the country’s 44 the Independence Day near Madan Mohan College around 7 am. When the procession reached at Sheikhghat area police chased the Shibir men and dispersed their procession, triggering clash. At one stage, the law enforcers opened fire on the Shibir men, leaving 20 activists injured. Police also arrested two Shibir activists from Jitu Miar point area. Kotwali thana officer-in-charge Ataur Rahman said the Shibir activists brought out the procession without prior permission and they had a plan to carry out sabotage. Six policemen were also injured during the clash, he said. Additional deputy police commissioner Md Rahmatullah said police fired bullets to bring the situation under control. – UNB
