20 injured in clashes, Pabna University closed

Clashes between pro-government and pro-opposition student factions over establishing supremacy in Pabna University of Science and Technology have forced the authorities to suspend all classes. The turf-war between Bangladesh Chhatra League and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal on Saturday left at least 12 people injured, police said.
Meanwhile, Chhatra League has demanded resignation of Proctor Kamruzzaman accusing him of favouring Chhatra Dal and student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Chhatra Shibir. The Proctor, however, vehemently denied the allegation.
Kamruzzaman said classes would remain suspended until June 25, but all examinations would be held as per schedule.
Sadar Police Station OC Kazi Haniful Islam said the clashes erupted over a dispute over collection of money for a farewell programme for the fourth year’s students of the electrical and electronics department.
He told bdnews24.com that police took control of the situation soon after reaching the spot.
The injured were given treatment at different local hospitals and clinics.
University’s BCL unit Convenor Mijanur Rahman Sobuj said Proctor Kamruzzaman helped Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir. “We, along with the general students, will boycott the classes till he is removed.” (Source: bdnews24.com)
