20-party decries killings with impunity, urges political solution

The BNP led 20-party alliance yesterday called for bringing normalcy as soon as possible to reach a consensus by shunning the path of violence and repression.
“The consequence of slender campaign and threat against top opposition leadership ignoring the call from home and abroad to resolve the political stalemate politically and the attempt to resolve it through repression will not bear any good,” said a statement issued by 20-party alliance.
The alliance made the statement a day after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told Parliament that Khaleda Zia would be tried for killings like a murderer. The statement signed by BNP vice chairman Selima Rahman said they think that the trial of perpatrators and remedies of terror acts and attacks on innocent people must take place.
“After the arrest of real culprits they should be tried through proper identification by carrying out a fair and neutral investigation,” said the statement.
The alliance, however, issued a note of warning that against any plot for killing opposition leaders and activists by giving impunity (clearance) to law enforcers and terrorists.
Those who indulge terrorism based politics are committing sabotage and heinous attacks on women, children and innocent people to take revenge for boycotting January 5 poll. They on the other hand, have intensified killings and repression and are trying to shift the responsibility to the opposition, said the statement.
It termed the killings of Chhatra Dal leader Nuruzzaman Jony, councillor of Narail pourasabha Imrul Quayes and JCD leader Motiur Rahman the worst example of extrajudicial killings.
Demanding the stop of extrajudicial killings, the statement said the ruling partymen have to be responsible to each killing and lawful measures would be taken against all concerned.
The 20-party alliance called upon all the members of law enforcing agencies to discharge their duties neutrally and lawfully.
“We are not your opponent. We are not against you…We expect you will stand besides the hopes and aspiration of the people and refrain from abiding by illegal and unlawful directives,” the statement added.
The alliance also drew the attention of international community and human rights organisations on occurrence of extrajudicial killings. – Staff Reporter
