2,000 kg hilsa seized in Benapole foiling smuggling bid

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized 2,000 kgs of hisla fish while those were being smuggled out to India through Gatipara border here early Wednesday.
Acting on secret information that a huge quantity of hilsa was being smuggled to India, a team of the BGB battalion-23 launched a drive in the area early in the morning and seized 2,000 kgs of the fish worth Tk17 lakh, said commanding officer of BGB Lieutenant Col Mostafizur Rahman.The BGB team fired 22 rounds of bullet as smugglers tried to resist them.But no one was injured in the firing.BGB could not arrest anyone as the smugglers managed to escape leaving behind the fish.The seized hilsa was deposited to Benapole customs office.A case was filed in this connection. -UNB, Benapole (Jessore)
