20,000 people marooned as flood hits Kurigram

Onrush of water from the upstream and incessant rainfall have flooded many areas of Fulbari, Rajarhat and Ulipur upazilas, rendering over 20,000 people marooned.

According to district Water Development Board (WDB), water levels of the Dharala river have increased by 37 centimeters, Teesta by 36 cm, Dudhkumar by 35 cm and Brahamaputra by 42 cm in the last 24 hours. Kurigram, UNB News Agency Reported.

Locals said several chars (shoals emerged from the riverbed) and low laying areas went under water. Many flood affected people have taken shelter in schools and cyclone shelters.

Local farmers are fearing huge losses as vast tracts of cropland land went under water.
