3 BNP leaders collect nomination forms to contest city polls

Dhaka, Dec 26 – Three BNP leaders — Asaduzzaman Ripon, Tabith Awal and, Engineer Ishraque Hossain — collected nomination papers on Thursday to contest the upcoming Dhaka city corporation elections.The trio collected the nomination forms from BNP’s Nayapaltan central office as the party decided to participate in the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) election.
Of them, Asaduzzaman Ripon and Tabith Awal have planned to contest the DNCC polls while Ishraque the DSCC election.
Tabith Awal, a BNP executive member, also contested the DNCC election in 2015.
Asaduzzaman Ripon is BNP’s special secretary and former president of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, while Ishraque Hossain is a member of BNP, and son of former mayor of undivided Dhaka city Sadeque Hossain Khoka.
Apart from mayoral candidates, many BNP leaders also collected their party’s nomination forms to vie for councillor posts in the elections to the two cities.
BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said their party nomination seekers can collect the form at Tk 10,000 each from the party’s central office by 4pm on Friday.
He said the aspirants will have to submit the nomination forms to the BNP office along with Tk 100,000 security money by 4pm the same day.
Later, the party nomination board will interview the aspirants on Saturday at the party chairperson’s Gulshan office.
The elections to Dhaka South and North city corporations will be held on 30 January next, according to a schedule announced by chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda on Sunday. – UNB
