Savar (Dhaka) March 19 – At least three students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) were injured in infighting between two halls over alleged sledging on the campus Sunday night.The incident took place between the fresher students of the Bishwakabi Rabindranath Tagore and the Mowlana Bhashani Halls at about 10:00 pm on the same day near the later hall.
The injured were identified as Sezan and Asad, the 46th batch students of Anthropology, who are also the residents of Bishwakabi Rabindranath Tagore Hall and Ankur, a 47 th batch student of Geography and Environment, who is also resident of Mowlana Bhashani Hall.
Ankur underwent treatment at Enam Medical Hospital while the rest at the JU Medical Center, medical sources confirmed.
In this regard, both the groups, mentioning some names, filed separate complaints with the VC and proctor yesterday.
Sources said, the fresher students of Bishwakabi Rabindranath Tagore Hall –enrolled under the session of 2017-18— were allegedly chanting some offensive word while they were on the way to Bottola. The feud, ensued after they were allegedly doing the same while on their way back from Bottola, left at least three injured.
However in the complaints, Shakil of Geological Sciences and Mukti of Public Health, also residents of Bhashani Hall, alleged of being attacked while Mahmud of Philosophy and Nasim of Management, also residents of Rabindranath Hall.
On information, the fresher students, like every year, bring out showdowns from the halls, enforced by the immediate senior fellows, also the activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), to expose their power and stablish supremacy. Meanwhile they allegedly chant some harassing words and slogans.
Earlier in the last year, the then fresher (45 th batch) students of Mowlana Bhashani Hall, from showdown, allegedly insulted two female students of the university.
Contacted about showdowns from the halls, JU BCL unit president Jewel Rana said: ‘We no way support the culture of bringing showdowns on the campus. We call to ditch this trend’. – JU Correspondent
