Two people were killed and 50 others injured in reported police firing and baton charge on a demonstration in Kalihati upazila in Tangail on Friday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Faruque Hossain, 30, of Kushtia village in the upazila, Shamim Hossain, 32, of Salenka village in Ghatail upazila and Farukh Mia of village Kalia of the district.
However, police confirmed one death in the incident.Witnesses said residents of Kalihati and Ghatail upazilas brought out a procession demanding the exemplary punishment of the culprits who stripped naked a youth in front of his mother at Satutia village in Kalihati upazila on Tuesday.
When the processionists were marching towards Kalihati Police Station from Kalihati bus stand to lay siege on the police station to press home their demand, law enforcers obstructed them.
The demonstrators tried to break the barricade. Police lobbed teargas shells and fired rubber bullets to disperse them.
The processionists pelted the law enforcers with brick chips and vandalised some vehicles and torched a police motorbike. Police charged baton on the agitating people and fired bullets that left 52 people, including Faruque and Shamim, injured.
Faruque was declared dead at Kalihati upazila health complex while Shamim died on the way to Tangail Medical College Hospital, said hospital sources.
The other injured were admitted to the medical college hospital. Police denied the allegation of firing on the demonstrators.
The acting police super of the district Sanjoy Kumar confirmed the death of a person but he did not admit that he was killed in police firing.
On Tuesday, Roma, son of Rafiqul Islam of Satutia village in Kalihati upazila, and his family members striped naked the youth of Athardana village in Ghatail in front of his mother after assaulting the duo during arbitration over his alleged extramarital affairs with Roma’s wife.
Later, police arrested Roma and his brother-in-law (sister’s husband) Hafizur after the victim’s mother filed a case against them.- News Desk
