Three people were killed and 27 vehicles were either torched or damaged across the country on Wednesday, the second day of the countrywide indefinite transport blockade enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance.
The killings were reported from in Noakhali and Sirajganj districts.
Besides, long-route bus movement remained halted in most places of the country but the launch and train services were almost normal on the second day of the blockade.In Noakhali, two people, including a local Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal activist, were killed and 20 people were injured in firing by police during a clash at Choumuhani Bazar in Begumganj upazila on Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as Rubel, 22, a local Jubo Dal activist and son of Tofail Ahmed, and Moinuddin Baburchi, 22, son of Khorshed Baburchi, both hailing form Durgapur in the upazila.
In Sirajganj, an auto-rickshaw passenger — Ismail Hossain, 60, of Jangidah village in Shahjadpur upazila — was killed in an attack by blockaders on Bogra-Nagarbari road in Ullahpara upazila at 1pm.
In the capital, eight buses were set ablaze in Shewrapara, Tolarbagh in Mirpur-1, Rampura, Paltan, Old Dhaka, Azimpur and Khilgaon areas on the second day of the blockade.
Vehicular movement in the city was also normal as blockaders were hardly seen in the capital city. Train services with Dhaka and other districts were also normal.
Huge law enforcers were seen deployed in different parts of the capital to fend off any untoward incident.
Besides, sporadic incidents of clashes, vandalism and arrest were reported from elsewhere in the country.
At least 50 people were injured in clashes between the 20-party activists with police and ruling Awami League men in different districts.
Besides, around 250 BNP-Jamaat men were arrested in different districts during the blockade hours on Wednesday.
The districts include Jessore, Sylhet, Satkhira, Laxmipur, Rajshahi, Brahmanbaria, Comilla, Thakurgaon and Sirajganj.
Eight vehicles were vandalised and three motorcycles torched in Noakhali while two buses were set ablaze in Gazipur and Jessore each, four auto-rickshaws damaged in Sylhet city and two vehicles were torched in Barisal city.
BNP chief Khaleda Zia called the countrywide indefinite blockade from Tuesday as the government did not allow her party and allies to hold protest rallies in the capital.
