34 more students hospitalised in Manikganj

Some 34 more schoolgirls were admitted to hospital with stomach pain in Shivalaya Upazila of the district on Saturday morning.Sources said a student of Teota Academy of Shivalaya was hospitalised with stomach pain from 10:30am. Later, a total of 34 students were taken to the Upazila Health Complex till filing the report.
Teota Academy headmaster Md. Mozammel Haque confirmed it to banglanews.
Hospital authority could not identify any reason behind the stomach pain.
But, it suspected that the students might have affected with ‘Mass Psychogenic Illness’.
Shivalaya upazila health officer Halim Mollah told banglanews, “The number of hospitalised girls with stomach pain may rise.”
Earlier on Thursday, some 68 schoolgirls of the Teota Academy were admitted to hospital with stomach pain in Shivalaya Upazila of the district.
Mass psychogenic illness (MPI), also called mass sociogenic illness, is “the rapid spread of illness signs and symptoms affecting members of a cohesive group, originating from a nervous system disturbance involving excitation, loss or alteration of function, whereby physical complaints that are exhibited unconsciously have no corresponding organic aetiology. banglanews24.com
