At least 40 people, including four policemen, were injured in a clash between the activists of ruling Awami League and opposition BNP in Daulatkhan upazila of the district on Monday morning.
Eight critically injured people were admitted to Daulatkhan Upazila Health Complex and Bhola Sadar Hospital while others received first aid. Witnesses said a group of local Awami League leaders and activists launched an attack on BNP leaders and activists at the opposition party’s Daulatkhan office when they were preparing to start a discussion meeting marking the founding anniversary of Swechhasebok Dal around 10 am.
The ruling party activists hurled brick-chips at the BNP office and ransacked it, prompting the BNP activists to retaliate. During chase and counter-chase at least 40 people were injured from both sides.
Mamunur Rashid, a local journalist, was beaten up by some unruly AL activists when he tried to capture the incident in camera. On information, Daulatkhan police rushed in and brought the situation under control. Later, both AL and BNP leaders blamed each other for the clash.
