40 Bagerhat villages inundated as embankments breach

The embankments of Water Development Board (WDB) in 5 upazilas of the
district werebreached at many points following the depression formed in the Bay of
Bengal and tidal surge and at least 40 villages in 5 upazilas were inundated.
The affected upazilas are: Mongla, Rampal, Morrelganj, Sharankhola and Bagerhat
Sadar. Out of them upazila headquarters of Mongla, Morrelganj, Sharankhola and
Rampal and shops and other enterprises of those areas were aloso  submerged .
The embankment of polder No,34/4 of Bemarta Union under Bagerhat Sadar Upazila
gave way and consequently Kalabaria and  Bisnupur villages went under
water. The gate of Daparara canal sluice gate under Gotapara Union in Bagerhat
Sadar Upazila was broken and consequently, Bhatsala, Chargram, Alukdia, Sultanpur ,
Knodla and Baniagati villages were flooded.
On the other hand, the embankment on the western bank of the river Daratana near
Bagerhat district was also broken and as a result, Radhaballav and
Katua villages went under water and more than one lakh people of the affected upazilas were marooned with
water and badly affected.
District Relief and Rehabilitation Department said that more than one
lakh people of five
upazilas were marooned. According to the District Fishery Department,
more than one
thousand enclosures of shrimps, lobsters and fish of other species
went under water and
fishes worth Tk.1 crore were washed away.
Mongla Port Purashava and its adjacent areas were also submerged with
water as there is
no embankment for the protection of the port town.
As a result, the onrush of the water of the river Pashur inundated the
town and its Singpore market, Bazar Masjid Road, Madrasa Road, Bandaghat, New Mai Road,Kabarsthan Road, Sramik Sngha Road, Ferry Ghat and other places and these areas go
under knee deep water twice in a day.
The traders and the shop keepers of the port town complained that the
authorities of the pourashava had not taken any initiative for the construction of
the town protection embankment and that is why the present situation has been created.
The poura area of Morrelganj and 25 villages of the upazilas were
inundated with the strong current of the river Panguchi that divided the upazila into two
parts. At the time of high tide the water level of the river rises up to four to five feet
above the danger level.
All the roads and the shops and offices of both government and non-government offices
like Upazila Nirbahi office, ofice of the Chairman of Upazila
Parishad, Sub-registry office, settlement office, BRDB office, Family Planning office, office
of the woman affair, offices of both  Primary and Secondary Education within
pourashava as well as in the Upazila headquarters went under water. The inundated villages
of the Upazila are: Khawlia, Fashiatala, Mady Barisal, Chalitabunia, Gabtala,
Bhaizor, Pubo Sarali, Baraikhali, Shaikhpara, Uttar Sutalari, Baharbunia, Fulhata, Teligati,
Serinikhali.
Sharankhola Upazila heaquarters and Rampal Upazila headquarters are also not protected
with embankments.  These two upazila headquarters are also inundated with the onrush
of the sea water.
