40 percent votes shown cast, polling in 139 centres Jan 16

Sunday’s general elections held in 139 constituencies had a 40 percent turnout, according to the Election Commission. Polling in the halted those centres under eight constituencies will take place on Jan 16.As many as 153 seats, among 300, returned winners without contest, as the BNP-led Opposition alliance had boycotted the polls. Voting took place at 17,249 polling centres, but balloting was halted at 205 centres due to violence.
According to the EC, around 41.5 million people had voted in 139 constituencies, while around 250,000 votes were cancelled.
Fresh polling will be held in centres were balloting had to be stopped because of Opposition violence will be held on Jan 16, the Election Commission has said.
