Local administration destroyed 400 kilograms of mangoes while those were being ripen chemically in Kaligram village under Bagha Upazila of the district on Monday, police and locals said.
On a tip-off, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Hamidul Haque accompanied by a police team conducted a special raid in the area found a grower, Alauddin, spraying chemical (calcium carbide) on the immature mangoes.
Subsequently, he seized the mango and destroyed those before public in general. Earlier on Saturday, UNO Hamidul Haque also destroyed another 400 kilograms of immature mango on the same charge.
He told the local journalists that some greedy businessmen have started harvesting immature mango and ripening those with harmful chemical for extra profit.
He categorically said legal action will be taken against those who will be found guilty in this regard as chemically tainted mango are harmful for the public health.
