US envoy concerned at unrest, UNFPA chief for talks

US ambassador to Dhaka Dan W Mozena termed the Shahbagh movement a
perfect example of realizing demands peacefully. He came up with the observation while exchanging views with
journalists in city’s American Center on Monday.
The US envoy also said violence cannot be a solution in expressing
opinion. The US government expressed its grave concern over the
ongoing political unrest and recent terrorist attack on minority
community in Bangladesh.”
While replying to a query about issuing ban on Jamaat, Mozena said It
is a registered party and they have elected parliament members. It is
an internal matter of the country and being an outsider he should not
make any comment on it.(Source: Banglanews24.com)
meanwhile, the visiting UN Under-Secretary-General Babatunde Osotimehin has
stressed on dialogue for resolving debates in democracies.
“Violence is something that we should not encourage,” he said in reply
to a question by journalists.
Osotimehin, who is the Executive Director of United Nations Population
Fund, arrived in Dhaka on Monday on a two-day visit to attend the
Global Leadership meeting on ‘Population Dynamics and the post 2015
development agenda’ starting on Tuesday.
Before assuming the post at the UN in Jan 2011, he was a minister of Nigeria.
“One of things I have learnt in my life is that there is absolutely
nothing that can be resolved through violence,” he said.
“You have to sit down and talk,” he said, perhaps in an oblique
reference to the deadlock in Bangladesh.
As the UN supports rule of law, he said, “You should not violate that
in any way.”
He refrained from a making a direct comment on the ongoing Shahbagh
movement, but said ‘people can protest’.
“You have your right to protest, the right to raise your voice to put
your issue in the public place. It’s a fundamental human right,” he
said and once again insisted that talks were needed to resolve any
issue.
Terming the attacks on minorities ‘unfortunate’, he said, UN always
encourage governments ‘to be inclusive.’
“Majority groups and minority groups must be able to have them to
express themselves.
“There is no justification in any way to violate the basic human
rights of anybody,” he said.
During his discussion with the journalists he emphasised on investing
in a better future for youth.
