45 hurt in Sirajganj BNP-police clash

At least 45 people, among them a few policemen, were injured in a clash between BNP activists and police in Baro Bazar area of the district town on Sunday.
Of the injured, one sustained bullet wounds, who was admitted to a local private clinic. Police said activists of the local unit of the opposition BNP brought out a procession, following a rally as part of the party’s central programme, from its office in the afternoon and when the procession
reached the area, the activists vandalised a police van and attacked the house of ruling Awami League (AL) leader Habibe Millat Munna and a nearby clinic.On information, police and Rapid Action Battalion members rushed to the spot and fired and lobbed a large number of rubber bullets and
teargas canisters to disperse the unruly activists, leaving 45 people, including a few policemen, injured. Later, the activists put up a barricade at Rail Gate intersection by torching tyres, which was lifted in the face of police action. Protesting the incident, activists of the local unit of AL brought out a procession in the evening.Contacted, the BNP leaders blamed provocation of the ruling party activists by hurling stones on their peaceful procession for the trouble, an allegation which AL denied. -UNB, Sirajganj
