5 awarded death for Ajit Karati’s murder

A Dhaka court on Monday sentenced five people to death in Ajit Karati murder case of Keraniganj.

Judge A B M Sajedur Rahman of the Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 also sentenced two others to 10-year rigorous imprisonment and fined then Tk 10,000 each. They will have to serve an extra year if they fail to pay the fine.

The court also exempted 12 others as their link with the murder could not be established.

According to Public Prosecutor Mahbubur Rahman, the death awardees are Salauddin, Monoranjan, Gopal Karati, Umesh Karati and Poran Karati.

Only Umesh Karati is absconding of the death awardees.

Shahidul Islam Munna and Radhakant Karati were sentenced to 10-year rigorous imprisonment.

According to reports, Ajit Karati was killed on Apr 20, 2010 in an attack by the accused over a land dispute. His brother Tapan Karati filed a murder case with the Keraniganj police the following day.

Police pressed charges against 23 people two months later, and the court framed charges against 19 people on Apr 18 this year.
