50 structures demolished, Gulistan area to be cleaned in 30 days

Dhaka – Dhaka South City Corporation  (DSCC) Mayor Mohammad Sayeed Khokon on Sunday announced that all footpaths of Gulistan area will be cleaned within 30 days for smooth movement of pedestrians.
However, the DSCC mayor also assured that hawkers can run their business on the footpath until they are rehabilitated without obstructing movement of pedestrians.The DSCC mayor made the remark during a eviction drive against illegal establishments of Gulistan area on Sunday morning.
Sayeed Khokon said Gulistan is a important area crossed by thousands of people every day. “We will do whatever it needs to clean the area, including conducting eviction drives every day,” he added.
The DSCC mayor alleged that a few corrupt police officers as well as several political leaders might have been involved in running business on the footpath by constructing illegal establishments.
He called upon the hawkers not to give any handle to anybody that could be used to manipulate them.
Saying that the DSCC have the capability to remove illegal billboards, banners and festoons within timeframe of 72 hours, the Mayor sought cooperations from the city dwellers in this regard.
During the eviction drive, around 50 illegal establishments were evicted from 11:30 am to 3:45 pm in Gulistan area.
Chief estate officer of DSCC Khalid Ahmed and two executive magistrates –– Mamunur Rashid and Nazmus Soyeb – accompanied the mayor during the drive. – News Desk
