50pc allowance for SC Judges approved

The Cabinet has approved a proposal to amend the law to grant 50 percent allowance on basic pay to Supreme Court Judges.
Cabinet Secretary Muhammad Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan told the media on that the Cabinet gave its final approval to amend the law in its Monday’s meeting.

He said that the Supreme Court Judges (Remuneration and Privileges) (Amendment) Bill-2014 will be placed in the Parliament after scrutiny.

“The Law and Justice Division had proposed to raise the Supreme Court Judges’ basic pay by 50 percent. The Cabinet has approved it after vetting (by the law ministry),” said the Cabinet secretary.

He said that remuneration of Judges of the apex court was fixed in accordance with the law formulated in 1978, which was amended in 2001.

“This is logical. The remuneration is rather low. It will still be low even after the raise,” the Secretary said, while replying to a query from the press over the reason behind the raise.
