Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard in a drive seized 512,400 metres of banned current nets worth Tk 1.24 crore from a launch near Chandpur Launchghat in Sadar upazila early Friday.Tipped off, a coastguard team, led by Chandpur Station commander Lt Nooruzzaman Sheikh, intercepted the Barisal-bound launch ‘MV Karnafuly-3’at the estuary of the Meghna and Dakatia rivers around 1am and seized the nets from the vessel after searching it, sources at the coastguard said.
However, the owners of the nets managed to flee the scene sensing the presence of the coastguard team.
Later, the nets were burnt down by the river bank around 11 am in the presence of fisheries officials.
