55 visitors detained for illegal entry in Sundarbans

Forest Department officials detained 55 visitors from four trawlers for trespassing in the Sundarbans on Wednesday morning.

East Sundarban’s Chandpai Range Officer Md Shahin Kabir said the Rash Mela festival was cancelled due to the severe cyclonic storm ‘Bulbul’ and tourists’ entry was banned in the forest.

A group of visitors still entered the forest defying the ban on November 8 and forest department detained them with some sharp weapons while they were returning through Pashur Channel in Harbaria.

Later, they were released after each paid up Tk 10,000 as fine for entering in the forest illegally, he added.

On November 5, forest department detained 60 visitors from three trawlers and a further 49 visitors were detained from four trawlers on November 11.
