A Supreme Court lawyer has brought charges of contempt of court against six secretaries for not implementing a court order within the time set form it.
The lawyer, Yunus Ali Akhand, petitioned the court on Sunday against the secretaries for not implementing a court stopping the use of English or mixed languages in signboards, billboards, nameplates, number plates and advertisements across the country.The bench of Justice Kazi Rezaul Haque and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain will hear the petition on Monday, Akhand said.
The defendants are the cabinet secretary, law secretary, home secretary, cultural affairs secretary, information secretary and education secretary.
The petition seeks a rule asking why the secretaries should not be charged with contempt of court. It also requests the court to order the secretaries to be present in court during the hearing.
The High Court issued an order on February 17, saying all sign boards, nameplates and number plates of vehicles must be written in Bengali, except for foreign embassies and entities, in Bangladesh.
Defendants were asked to implement the order within one month and notify the court.-bdnews24.com
