6000 new taxi cabs in city soon

A total of 6000 new eco-friendly taxi cabs will be introduced in the public transport sector of the capital.Communications Minister Obaidul Quader made the disclosure in view exchange meeting with officers held at head office of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) on Thursday.
The ruling Awami League lawmaker also said the existing policy would be amended by May 20 in this regard and a circulation would be issued.
As per the new policy, the intending institutions should have at least 250 taxi cabs. He also said, “The formulation of new policy to give approval CNG-run auto-rickshaws in Dhaka and Chittagong metropolis is underway.”
Besides, around 78000 digital number plates and over 400,000 of smart card driving licenses have been distributed among the drivers to modernise the service of BRTA, he told his audience.
Obaidul Quader further observed that political prudence is necessary to control problems like traffic jam and road accident as only administrative steps is not enough.
Mentioning that the number of mobile courts has been increased to 11 from two, minister said though it has increased than before, the service of BRTA is yet to reach at the expected level.
