60,000 Rohingya youths to be trained for community work

Dhaka, Jan 30 – The cabinet committee on purchases has approved a project of the disaster management ministry to help to train at least 60,000 youths of displaced Myanmar citizen known as ‘Rohingya’ to improve access to basic services and build faster and social resilience of their population in Cox’s Bazar. The approval was given at the committee meeting at the secretariat with the finance minister in the chair yesterday.
After a high official of the Cabinet Division told the reporters that the World Food Programme (WFP) will implement the project aiming to involve Rohingya youths to include them in the development works under the ‘Emergency Multi-Sector Rohingya Crisis Response Project’.
The International Development Association (IDA), a member of the World Bank Group, will provide of Tk 297.15 crore as grant for implementing the project, he said.
Under the project, the authorities concerned will improve the services and basic needs and development of Infrastructure for the Rohingyas.
The 60,000 Rohingya youths will be appointed under UN Agencies (direct) process as a worker on ‘need basis’ after providing required training to them,” the official informed.
According to the proposal, the authorities will plant grass at 90 hector lands through the Rohingya youths to safe from land erosion in their camps areas in Cox’s Bazar.
At the same time, the Rohingya youths will help to construct a six-kilometer road, 60,000 square Km slope protection, construction 2.4 Km walking way, bamboo pool, required rehabilitation works of their camps areas, the proposal added.
If we will involve the Rohingya youth to the works, they will be busy with their works, which will help to reduce crimes like smugglings of yaba and child marriage, he added.
Sources said since August 25, 2017, violence in Rakhine state in Myanmar, more than 745,000 Rohingyas have entered into the Cox’s Bazar and they are living in extremely congested conditions in 34 camps. – Staff Reporter
