At least seventy shanties of a slum burnt down in a devastating fire in the city’s Sonadanga area on Friday night.
Masuk Sarder, senior station officer of Khulna fire service and civil defense, said the fire originated from an electric short circuit in a shanty of one Barek at Mathorpatti slum of the area around 8:30pm and soon spread to adjoining ones.On information, four fire fighting units from the city rushed to the scene and doused the blaze after about three hours of frantic efforts.A total of 70 shanties burnt down in the blaze.However, about 10 people, including four firemen, received injuries while extinguishing the fire.Khulna deputy commissioner Anis Mahmud and other high officials visited the spot at night. -UNB, Khulna
