8000 kilos carp fries netted from Halda River in BD in 2 hrs

Chittagong, May 26 –Fishermen collected around 8,000 kg eggs from the Halda River, the only natural fish spawning waterbody in South Asia, on Saturday night.
Mother fishes of different species released eggs in the Halda River. Fishermen initiated netting eggs from Friday dawn.
The authorities concerned said that egg collection may exceed previous records this year as they have taken various supportive measures.
Upazila Nirbahi officer Ruhul Amin, said around 400 fishermen collected the fish eggs in two hours beginning at 9:30 pm.
The fishermen collected the eggs from Kholifar Ghona, Ramdash Munshir Hat to Madunag hat areas.
Fisherman Mohammad Bahadur said that he collected 18-20kg eggs from the river.
The UNO said that the carp fish have started releasing eggs and the fishermen started to collect eggs from 9:30 pm. Each fisherman collected around 20-25kg eggs, he said.
Generally, mother fishes release their eggs during heavy rain in the Bangla months of Chaitra and Baishakh (March-May). The area witnessed minimum rainfall this year.
The indigenous fish species including Ruhi, Mrigel, Katla and Kalbaush started releasing eggs as heavy rain with thunderbolts started on Friday evening.
About 22,680 kg eggs were collected from Halda in 2018 and 1,680 kg in 2017, 735 kg in 2016, 2,800 kg in 2015 and 16,500 kg in 2014. -UNB
