Dhaka – The BNP sought an appointment with President Abdul Hamid to present party chairperson Khaleda Zia’s proposal on reconstitution of the Election Commission.“Since the Constitution empowers the President to constitute the Election Commission, the BNP will submit Khaleda Zia’s proposal before him. An appointment has already been sought with President to present the proposal but the BNP did not get any time,” said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Talking to reporters at party central office, the BNP leader hoped that the President give them opportunity to meet him and place Khaleda’s proposal before him.
“We do hope that the President will make the opportunity for us to meet him and place our proposal. We are waiting to have his appointment,” he said.
He said the President is the guardian of the state and he does not belong any political party. We think that the President would accept our proposal taking it into consideration, he added.
Replying to a question, he said the BNP would also send party proposal to all other political parties.
Standing committee member Mirza Abbas and senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, among others, were present on the occasion.
The tenure of the incumbent Election Commission headed by Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed will expire in February next. The next national elections will be held under the new EC likely to be formed soon.
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Friday at a function placed a 13-point proposal on reconstitution of EC based on consensus of political parties having representation in parliaments since the independence in 1971.
Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader described Khaleda’s proposal without substance while Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad said the political parties remain out of parliament have no right to speak on the reconstitution of EC. – Staff Reporter
