Performance Art Week begins

The Performance Art Week 2016 featuring 20 performance artistes of diverse backgrounds kicked off on December 27 at Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts. The open programme has been scheduled to take place at three different venues: Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts, Daily Star-Bengal Arts Precinct and Gyantapash Abdur Razzaq Bidyapeeth. Today’s programme will be held at the Daily Star-Bengal Arts Precinct where five artists will perform on intense and complex issues. Today’s artists are Sanad Kumar Biswas (‘Artist is A Gift Box’ at 4pm), Sharkar Nasrin Toontoon (‘Selfie at 4.15pm), Nazia Andaleeb Preema, Arpita Singha Lopa and more.

Organised by the Visual Arts Programme of Bengal Foundation, the four-day event will continue till December 30. Palash Bhattacharjee’s “Marked” was the opening performance of the day. Using electric blower, sound box, dust, water and toys, Palash showcased different reactions of human which are often not visible.

Next came Joydeb Roaja, a prominent artiste from Khagrachari, who performed “Prajanma Kalpadrup O Anudrum”. Roaja’s performances, paintings and artworks are influenced by nature and lifestyle of hill tracts area mostly calling for preserving the culture and natural resources of indigenous people of the country.

Jewel A Rob’s “Eternal Moments: Numbness” marked the third performance of the opening day. This performance was a part of the artist’s experimental series based on object and time focusing on our perception of things and body language.

Hasna Hena Porosh presented “I Have to Run; I Don’t Know How to Stop” portraying the artiste’s personal daily life and hectic schedule of all modern society men.

The programme is organised with an aim to look into the multiple complexities of the ephemeral medium of performance arts and its cultural and socio-political influences through discussions, performances and exhibitions.

Featuring the documentations of Performance Art Week 2016, the programme will also hold an exhibition titled “ephemeral: perennial” exploring the mediums and possibilities of documenting performance art. The exhibition will be inaugurated by Professor Syed Manzoorul Islam and art critic Professor Md. Abul Monsur at Daily Star-Bengal Arts Precinct on January 6.
