Dhaka – The opposition BNP on Saturday expressed the doubt whether the President could constitute the Election Commission in line with the hopes and aspiration of the people.“Neutrality was not maintained in formation of the search committee to constitute the EC. The people started saying the EC will be formed as per desire of the Prime Minister,” said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Aalmgir while speaking at a function at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU).
The BNP leader however expects that the President will reflect the hopes and aspirations of the people to constitute the EC.
“His (President) name will be written in golden alphabets if he could constitute the EC reflecting the aspirations of the people. Otherwise, it will create a scandal chapter in the history,” he said.
Mirza Alamgir alleged that uniformed people were controlling everything in the country.
“The uniformed people are running the country, not the Awami League,” he said.
Dhaka city unit of Jatiya Ganatantrik Party (Jagpa) organized the meeting demanding constitution of a neutral EC and election-time government.
The BNP secretary general criticised the government for carrying out repression on political leaders and journalists saying that the intensity level of oppression and harassment on political leaders and activists, and journalists during the present government crossed all the past governments.
He said the AL government is directly involved with the search committee formed by the President. Despite this we submitted names for the EC as we believe in democracy and want to see the democracy consolidated,” he added.
He made it clear that along with a neutral EC they want holding the next general election under a neutral government.
The BNP leader also criticized the President not to invite all registered political parties during the talks and said they did not expect it from him as he said the President is not a political leader of a party but he the guardian of the state.
Jagpa President Shafiul Alam Prodhan, general secretary Khandaker Lutfor Rahman and Dhaka city president Asadur Rahman, also spoke on the occasion. – Staff Reporter
