Dhaka flyover girder collapse kills one injures 2

Dhaka, Mar 13 – A man was killed and two others, including a construction engineer, were injured as a concrete girder of the under-construction Malibagh-Mouchak flyover collapsed on Malibagh level-crossing in the city early Monday.The deceased was identified as Swapan, 40, hailing from Kishoreganj’s Pakundia upazila. The two injured were Toma Group engineer Polash and Nurunnabi, believed to be a pedestrian.
Police and witnesses said the girder fell off the flyover’s two pillars on the level-crossing when a crane was placing another girder onto them around 1:50am, leaving three people seriously injured.
Local people rescued them from under the girder and took them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where Swapan died. Two severed foots were seen lying under the collapsed girder.
Moshiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Ramna Police Station, said police and fire brigade members rushed to the spot soon after the incident and carried out the salvage operation.
Train communications from Kamalapur Railway Station with different parts of the county were suspended for nearly three and half hours following the incident. It resumed after the firefighters removed the girder from the trail track around 5:30am.
The salvage operation got delayed as the drivers of two cranes working to lift and place the girders fled the scene after the incident keeping their vehicle engines on.
Railway thana SI Rashed Rana said train communications reassumed around 6:15am.
At least 13 people were killed and many others injured in a similar incident in Chittagong in 2012 when a concrete girder of the under-construction flyover at Bahaddarhat collapsed on a kitchen market. – UNB
