Rony retreats from resignation plan, ITV journos get bail

After a daylong drama over his resignation from parliament, ruling Awami League MP Golam Maula Rony on Tuesday retreated from his plan to quit saying he now leaves to the party.
“There’re two options for me either to quilt voluntarily or as per the will of the party. If the party wants me to resign, I can do that and I’ve no problem,” Rony told UNB after a meeting with Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury.
About the meeting with the Speaker, the AL MP said, “I went to her to talk about my problems and find a way-out to it,” he said.
Rony said he asked the Speaker whether Parliament is embarrassed following his controversy over assaulting two journalists, and she replied, “There’s no reason for Parliament to be embarrassed over a personal matter.”
Rony’s resignation talks came to fore following a status on his Facebook earlier in the day where Rony hinted about his resignation saying, “Probably, I’m going to resign. I feel, I should face the conspiracy as general public.”
Rony said he will prove what actually happened on that day. “I’ll invite media personalities to make a level playing field for me and my opponent.”
Before meeting the Speaker, Rony told journalists that the resignation from parliament is a constitutional matter. “I’m going to meet the Speaker to talk to her about it.”
On Saturday, MP Rony along with his supporters assaulted Independent TV reporter Imtiaz Momin Sony and cameraman Mohsin Mukul Bakul when they went to Rony’s office on the 9th floor of ‘Meherba Plaza’ at Topkhana Road in the city to verify some allegations against the MP.
Hours after the Independent Television authorities filed a case against Rony, the ruling party MP filed a counter-case against Salman F Rahman, chairman of Independent TV, and others on Saturday night on charge of attempting to kill him.
On Sunday, a Dhaka court granted bail on bond to young ruling party MP Golam Maula Rony in an attempt-to-murder case.
Two journalists of private TV channel Independent Television secured bail on Tuesday in a case filed by Awami League MP Golam Maula Rony.
A joint bench of the High Court comprising justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and justice Md Jahangir Hossain granted bail to Independent Television reporter Imtiaz Momin Sony and cameraman Mohsin Mukul for three months.
Ruling party MP Golam Maula Rony filed the case with Shahbagh police station against the two journalists, Salman F Rahman, one of the owners of the TV channel, and some others on Saturday night for attempting to kill him.
He also brought allegations of abduction and extortion against Salman and two journalists of the private TV channel.
Earlier, the TV channel authorities filed a case with the same police station against Rony and his cohorts on charge of an attempt to murder following assaults on the two journalists.
